John Galt Memorial Fountain
Galt was born in Irvine in 1779 and moved to Greenock aged 10. There he finished his schooling and became an apprentice at Greenock Custom House, joining James Miller and Company as a junior clerk in 1796.
He became secretary to the Canada Company after moving to London in 1804. Much of his adult life was spent in Canada, where he founded the city of Guelph ( Link
On retirement he returned to Greenock, where he did much of his writing. He died in the town in 1839, and is buried in a small cemetery on Inverkip Street.
