John Galt Memorial Fountain

Located on the Esplanade, at the end of Rosneath Street, the fountain was erected in memory of the Irvine born novelist, entrepreneur, and political and social commentator who died in Greenock in 1839. Regarded as the first political novelist in the English language, as he was the first to deal with issues related to the Industrial Revolution.

Galt was born in Irvine in 1779 and moved to Greenock aged 10. There he finished his schooling and became an apprentice at Greenock Custom House, joining James Miller and Company as a junior clerk in 1796.

He became secretary to the Canada Company after moving to London in 1804. Much of his adult life was spent in Canada, where he founded the city of Guelph ( LinkExternal link )and the town of Goderich (the prettiest town in Canada LinkExternal link ).

On retirement he returned to Greenock, where he did much of his writing. He died in the town in 1839, and is buried in a small cemetery on Inverkip Street.
