Arran
A road encircles the island, which used to be called the A841 for its entirety, but now the western and southern sections of the loop have been declassified to a 'C' road. Two other roads cross the island roughly diagonally from NE to SW, these are the B880 known as The String, and further to the south a minor road known as The Ross.
Arran is often referred to as "Scotland in miniature" as it has highlands in the north, culminating in Goatfell and lowlands to the south.
As Scottish islands go, it is quite a busy place with plenty of shops, restaurants, inns, hotels etc. All of these facilities are to be found near the coast as inland it is almost entirely rural or rugged with very few houses and just a few farms.
The main town is Brodick with its fine seafront and notable castle (NTS). There are a number of other settlements around the coast notably Lamlash, Whiting Bay, Blackwaterfoot and Lochranza.
The large ferry to the island runs from Ardrossan on the mainland to Brodick, while a smaller ferry runs from Lochranza to either Claonaig (summer) or Tarbert (winter) both on Kintyre.
Statistics:
Area: 167 miles² (43,201 ha) - (Scottish island rank: 7)
Population: 4,629 (Scottish island rank: 6)
Highest point: Goatfell 2867' (874m)
Chief settlement: Brodick (popn.c.890)
