St Buryan - Church

The church in the Cornish village of St Buryan is dedicated to the saint of the same name (though also known by various other names; Buriana, Beriana, Buriena, Beriena) - he was a C6th Irish Christian missionary Saint. The church is mostly C15th or early C16th and externally has been little altered since then. The north wall of the chancel dates back to the C12th, as there was an earlier church on the site which was incorporated into the one seen today - indeed there has been a church on this site since at least c.930AD, built by King Athelstan (the first King of all the English).
The church is EH Grade I listed LinkExternal link and whilst there are not many monuments etc. inside the church it contains a particularly fine "early C16th rood screen reassembled from fragments in 1910 and extended to its original size and with much original red, blue and green paint and gilding to the original medieval parts"[from EH Listing].
Immediately outside the church on the southern side next to the path from the gates is a pre-conquest cross-head which is separately Grade II listed: LinkExternal link but more significantly is a Scheduled Ancient Monument: LinkExternal link
There are also a dozen-or-so other listed items in the churchyard.
The lofty tower (At 92'(28m) the second tallest in Cornwall) which is a landmark for miles around contains the heaviest peel of six bells in the world - see details below:

Treble - 9cwt-1qtr-11lb 36" diameter A# cast 2001
