St Briavels Castle

The St Briavels Castle was built in the early 12th century, with Edward I adding the twin-towered gatehouse in 1292. The castle served as an important royal castle defending the nearby border with Wales. The castle was also an administrative and judicial centre for the Royal Forest of Dean and search as was a royal hunting lodge for the king.

With iron ore extracted in the Forest of Dean the castle was a factory making crossbow quarrel, or bolt, for Edward I's campaigns against the Welsh and Scots. After Edward's conquest of Wales, the castle became strategically less important and has been used as a debtor's prison. Today the castle is in the care of English Heritage and used as a youth hostel by the YHA. The castle is Grade I listed; see: LinkExternal link
