Blackburn Cathedral

There has been Christian worship documented on this site since 596 AD, and a permanent church since the 11th century. The present Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin, part of the parish of 'St Mary the Virgin and St Paul Blackburn', is a 20th century enlargement by William Forsyth and Laurence King of the parish church of 1820-26 by John Palmer of Manchester, following the creation of the Diocese of Blackburn out of that of Manchester in 1926. Due to the Second World War and difficulties of fundraising, the eastern extension was not completed until 1977, and there have been later alterations. The building is grade II* listed (list entry 1239147), the grading being explained as reflecting "an interesting early example of archaeologically careful pre-Puginian Gothic Revival work".
