Church of Christ the Consoler
The closed church of Christ the Consoler, in the parish of Skelton-Cum-Newby, stands in the grounds of Newby Hall near Ripon (a grade II* listed park). It was built as an estate church in 1871-1876 for Lady Vyner in memory of her son Frederick who was murdered in 1870. The architect was William Burges, who aligned the axis of the church with the 'west' end directly facing Newby Hall, rather than the traditional west-east orientation. It is filled with examples of Victorian fine arts.
This building replaced St Helen's in Skelton village Link as the parish church. Surprisingly, St Helen's was only formally declared redundant in 1988 on the legal basis of not having been used since before 1964. However, only three years later St Helen's was brought back into use as the parish church. Christ the Consoler was formally closed for worship on 14 December 1991. It is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

The churchyard wall and a well within the churchyard are separately listed.
The CCT is responsible for the 'old' churchyard, which only contains a few family burials (the North Yorkshire County Record Office catalogue mentions a register of burials 1811-1876). There is a parish churchyard adjacent, used for subsequent burials.
The church building straddles the grid line between two 1km squares, but I have chosen to allocate this description to SE3567 which contains the central spire and west end.
