Hampden Bowling Club, one of the three Hampden Park sites

Opened by Queens Park FC in 1873 and existing until 1884, the original Hampden Park was the first enclosed, purpose-built, international football ground in the world. Several innovations such as the first turnstiles, a season-ticket scheme for Queen's Park FC home games and a team bath put the stadium ahead of its time. Queens Park quickly realised that the public (now known as 'fans') would pay to come and watch their beautiful, passing game within an enclosed space - which they did in great numbers. Until then, football had been played in open fields or cricket grounds.

In 1884, Queens Park and Scotland, were forced to move to the Second Hampden Park, 150 metres to the east at Cathkin, due to the building of the railway from Glasgow to Cathcart.

Hampden Bowling Club and Kingsley Gardens now occupy the site of the original Hampden park.
