Cuthbert Brodrick, architect, Kingston upon Hull
Cuthbert Brodrick (1821-1905) was born in Kingston upon Hull, the son of a merchant and shipowner. He set up his own architectural practice in 1846 at No.1 Savile Street, becoming the most celebrated Hull-born architect. Although his most famous building is Leeds Town Hall, Brodrick designed a number of buildings in Kingston upon Hull though none of significance survive. The Royal Institution Link
of 1852 was destroyed in the Blitz. The Town Hall Link of 1862-5 was demolished (The cupola from the tower survives in Pearson Park; the ornate cast-iron gates were recycled for use in the replacement Guildhall) to make way for the present Guildhall.
