Holy Trinity Church began as the Chapel of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, a chapel-of-ease to Hessle parish church. It would appear that the building of the chapel commenced soon after the establishment of Wyke upon Hull as a township in its own right, independent of the vill of Myton.

In 1301, the Archbishop of York decreed to consecrate a cemetery at Kingston upon Hull. The site for the burial ground was a piece of empty ground of ½ acre abutting the chapel on the west (and up to today’s King Street, the entire site now called Trinity Square) which, in 1269-70, the Abbot of Meaux Abbey had given to the Canons of Watton Abbey. (The Canons of Guisborough Priory were rectors of Hessle Church. It would appear that the Priory was also patron of Watton Priory. Watton collected the tithes due to the chapel of Holy Trinity and paid a fixed sum to Guisborough Priory.)

Up to the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the incumbents of Hessle were usually canons of Guisborough. Until 1661, when Holy Trinity was split from Hessle and created a parish church, the vicars of Hessle were also the incumbents of the chapel of Holy Trinity, Hull. The church was called Holy Trinity Church until 13 May 2017 when it became Hull Minster.
