Electricity Supply, Kingston upon Hull

The works of the Hull Hydraulic Power Company were built in 1875 in Catherine Street. Operational from 1876, it served the Old Town and other areas before closing down in 1947. It was the first hydraulic system laid by Act of Parliament, and also the first public utility in the city. LinkExternal link LinkExternal link

In 1893 the Kingston upon Hull Corporation opened its first electricity generating station in Dagger Lane to supply power to the Old Town. Here is a photo of the CORPORATION ELECTRIC LIGHTING STATION 1892 in Dagger Lane: LinkExternal link It was situated on the west side of the lane between the former Page's Square (next to No.27) and Banks Court (next to No.29). The whole of the city's supply area came under the Yorkshire Electricity Board after nationalization in 1948. Yorkshire Electricity Board was privatised in 1990 as the Yorkshire Electricity Group plc. Wikipedia: LinkExternal link

In January 2016, construction began on a new power plant to provide electricity for more than one-third of the homes in the city. The plant became fully operational in 2018, processing approximately 250,000 tonnes of waste per annum. Further details on the web-site of EnergyWorksHull: LinkExternal link
