Church of the Immaculate Conception, Scarthingwell
It was constructed in 1854 to a design by John Bownas and William Atkinson, described in contemporary reports as being in Byzantone style.(This is probably more suited to it than the Historic England description as Norman style.) After the demolition of the Hall in 1960, the chapel was retained as the local Roman Catholic parish church.
The odd construction of the western end of the chapel is a legacy of its attachment to the Hall. Between the west gable wall of the chapel proper and the second gable at the far western end – actually originally part of the hall is an annexe enclosing a gallery (now the organ loft) which is thought to have acted as the family pew, with direct access from the Hall. On the south side of the church is a small porch, with doorways on two sides, one with elaborate chevron moulding. The vestry and modern bell turret were added in the 20th century after the demolition of the hall. The church is Listed Grade II.
