Pearson Park, Kingston upon Hull

In 1860, Zachariah Pearson, a ship-owner and mayor, gifted a 27-acre site to the city to become Kingston upon Hull's first public park. Pearson's intention was to provide the 'working classes' with 'a place which they might call their own, for the purpose of health and recreation.' Pearson Park, opened 1862, was designed by James Niven, curator of Hull Botanic Garden. Features include a cast iron drinking fountain (1861) and statues of Queen Victoria (installed 1861) and Prince Albert (installed 1868). A memorial to Pearson was added in 1897. A bandstand was installed in 1908. In 1912 a cupola rescued from the demolished town hall was installed in the park. Circa1930 a Victorian style conservatory was built near the lake. Late 20th century modifications include installation of fountains in the lake, and construction of a children's playground on the west edge of the park. Restoration of the entrance archway was undertaken in 2018-19.
