Shared description
St James' Parish Church, Sutton on Hull, Yorkshire
The Archbishop of York issued a licence to establish a church in 1347. Although St James was dedicated in 1349, the dead had to be taken for burial to the mother church at Wawne. Sutton only received its own right of burial in 1454; there is, however, contemporary evidence that parishioners of Sutton had been buried here, unofficially, for many years beforehand. The font, however, dates from circa 1200, believed to have been used in an earlier chapel at Sutton. Interior restoration 1866-7 and organ chamber added 1883 by Smith & Brodrick.
