The Engine Shed, University of Northampton

The former Midland Railway engine shed was Listed grade II in 1995 when it was in a state of dereliction. It has since been restored to become the Students’ Union at the University of Northampton, providing a variety of recreational facilities.
It was built in 1873 when the Midland Railway built its branch line from Bedford to Northampton. This closed to passengers in 1962 and freight in 1964.
The small office building, now a store, which forms part of the Students’ Union development has also been restored although it is not included in the Listing.
