Charles Mountain, junior, architect, Kingston upon Hull

Charles Mountain (1773-1839) was the son of Charles Mountain, senior (1743-1805), inheriting his father’s business upon his death. He had been trained as a slater prior to becoming the town’s leading Georgian architect.

Charles was baptized at York, St Michael le Belfry, 10 December 1773, and buried at Wakefield, All Saints, 23 April 1839.

His portfolio included:

• Nos. 24-28 Whitefriargate, 1826-27, attributed, for Trinity House
• Trinity Almshouses, Posterngate, 1826 (now Carmelite House), for Trinity House
• Assembly Rooms, Kingston Square, 1830-34 (now New Theatre)
• Guildhall, Register Square, Beverley, 1832-35
• St Mary’s Manor, North Bar Within, Beverley, c1828, attributed for remodelling
• Burton Constable Hall: blue drawing room, 1820s
