The 'Fen Causeway' Roman road

Margary (1955) noted that "Traces of a Roman road have for long been recognized crossing the Fens on a course from Peterborough through Whittlesea, March, and Nordelph to Denver, ... ", and described this under his road number 25, the 'Fen Road'. The road probably connected to the Roman roads of Ermine Street and King Street near Water Newton, west of Peterborough, and continued east beyond the Fens to the Icknield Way. In many places its precise course is uncertain, and recent research using LiDAR imagery sometimes suggests a different route to that marked as 'fen causeway' on OS maps.
A summary of archaeological investigations is given on the Norfolk Heritage Explorer website, and maps of the route based on LiDAR can be found on David Ratledge's website.

About shared descriptions

These Shared Descriptions are common to multiple images.

For example, you can create a generic description for an object shown in a photo, and reuse the description on all photos of the object. All descriptions are public and shared between contributors, i.e. you can reuse a description created by others, just as they can use yours.
