Edlesborough - Church of St Mary

The massive edifice of St Mary's church sits on a chalk hillock to the west of the village of Edlesborough with commanding views especially to the southwest towards Ivinghoe Beacon. The church atop its hill is a landmark for miles around.
The bulk of the church - its nave and aisles - dates from the early C13th with the chancel being added a little later in the same century. The mighty West Tower and the windows are from the following century with the clerestory, North Chapel and porches being added in the C15th. A lightning strike on 28th March 1828 caused a fire in the tower and resulted in its restoration in the C19th.
Although now no longer used for regular worship, it remains consecrated and so can host weddings for example. It is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust - see LinkExternal link
They have produced a useful informative leaflet about the church - see chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/LinkExternal link
Unsurprisingly the church is EH Grade I listed: LinkExternal link
Among the interesting features within the church are C15th misericords, a fine pulpit with tester (a sounding board above the pulpit, richly carved), and a good if simple rood screen. The octagonal font, in fine condition, also dates from the C15th.
The Victorian wall paintings date from 1867 and are by Daniel Bell.
