Beverley & Barmston Drain, Yorkshire

The Beverley and Barmston Drainage Act was passed in 1798 to drain the marshes to the west of the river Hull. A new drain was cut, discharging into the river Hull at High Flags sluice, Wincolmlee. The project was completed in 1810.

The Beverley and Barmston Drain History and Wildlife Trail (completed in 2024) is an integral part of Hull’s Dynamic Drains project, which aims to improve the city’s urban watercourses, boost wildlife habitats and encourage people to connect with their natural environment. Along the way people can find out more about the local history at each of the ten bridges crossing the drain and spot some wildlife native to the location. From north to south, within Kingston upon Hull, the bridges are located at: Hall Road, Greenwood Avenue, Endike Lane, Beresford Avenue, Clough Road, Sculcoates Lane, Bridlington Avenue, Fountain Road, Lockwood Street, High Flags Outfall (Wincolmlee).
