West Ham Sewage Pumping Station

This sewage pumping station was built for West Ham Borough Council between 1895 and 1900 and discharged into the Northern Outfall Sewer. It contains two Woolf compound rotative, condensing, beam pumping engines by the Lilleshall Company of Oakengates, Shropshire.
The two beam engines are rated at 240 horsepower at 120 psi and 12 rpm. The steam cylinders are 30" 4' 9 11/16" for the high pressure and 48" x 7' 6" for the low pressure. Each engine drove two bucket pumps 62" bore x 4' 9 11/16" stroke. They lifted 1200 gallons per revolution to a height of 42'. The flywheels are 22' diameter and weigh 20 tons.
Steam was supplied from 9 Lancashire boilers.
The last engine was shut down at 12:00 hours on 10/01/1972.
