Kettle Holes
Kettle holes are a common feature of post-glacial landscapes. They tend to occur as a group of small lochans together on a patch of relatively level ground. As the glaciers that covered the land melted and retreated at the end of the last Ice Age some 10,000 years ago, blocks of ice were left stranded (not icebergs, strictly speaking, as they are not free-floating). In periglacial conditions large ice blocks can remain intact for a very long time while moraines and glacial debris are dumped around them by meltwater streams, building up a solid ridge round each ice block. When one of these ice blocks eventually melts, it leaves a shallow depression which then fills with water.
