Pontypool Park

Capel Hanbury, a local ironmaster purchased the tract of steeply undulating land that now forms Pontypool Park in the 17th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, a later member of the family, Capel Hanbury Leigh, undertook significant improvement works forming the basis of the park as it is today. The park passed into public ownership after the death of John Hanbury in 1921 although his house is now a school and part of the park has since become a housing estate. The southern part of the park, nearest the town centre, has a range of leisure facilities including a bandstand, a rugby ground and dry ski slope. The rest of the park feels more remote and there are superb views from the highest areas. Two particular features worthy of note are the shell grotto built in the 1830s and the folly tower built in 1837, demolished in the 1940s and rebuilt in the 1990s.
