Castor Hanglands National Nature Reserve

The Castor Hanglands National Nature Reserve is a 90 hectare, species-rich mixture of woodland, scrub, wetland, and managed grassland. The wood is thought to have been woodland for over 1,000 years, mentioned in the Domesday Book (1087); the name ‘hangra’ being an Old English word for a wood on a hill. The woods later became part of the Mediaeval hunting Forest of Nassaburgh. LinkExternal link
Sadly, this quiet retreat for nature is threatened with Peterborough's 2024 proposals for a 3,000 home housing estate to be built on the government's recently purchased land just south of the reserve. LinkExternal link

About shared descriptions

These Shared Descriptions are common to multiple images.
