On Freedom's Wings

1:1 sculpture of Avro Lancaster R5689 (VN-N) which crashed in September 1942 as it limped home towards nearby RAF Swinderby with just the two starboard engines working. She was returning from mine laying operations in the Baltic when the port engines failed and she crashed in nearby Thurlby Wood at 01.30 hours on 19th September 1942.
Only three of the seven man crew survived, the pilot Sgt. Edward John Morley RAAF, wireless operator and gunner Sgt. John William Hamilton Dalby RAAF and air gunner Flt. Sgt. Iain Fraser RCAF. Sadly, flight engineer Sgt. Sidney Charles Garrett RAF, observer Flying Officer George William Marshall Harrison RAAF, air bomber Sgt. Harry Male RAF and air gunner Sgt. James Reginald Gibbons RCAF were killed.
Though the sculpture depicts R5689, it represents a tribute to all Bomber Command crews including the many from 'bomber county' Lincolnshire.
