In Ozzy Osbourne's footsteps
Today, on what would have been Ozzy Osbourne's 77th birthday, I walked from Villa Park to Birmingham City Centre to celebrate the remarkable life of my hero, Ozzy Osbourne. Now Julie Andrews said "Let's start at the very beginning" but I started at the end. On 5 July 2025 Ozzy and the original Black Sabbath played their last gig topping a stellar line up including Metallica, Slayer, G'n'R, Tool and Pantera. 17 later on 22 July I was celebrating the end of term with my school colleagues when all our phones pinged at once. Ozzy had died. Despite his world wide fame, awesome talent and, yes, zany antics, I immediately thought of his family; then the Black Sabbath/ Blizzard of Oz families. In an age when so many celebrities are slickly packaged, yet essentially bland, the outpouring of love for a real character, an amazing singer, a showman, a flawed talent, yes, but the genuine article. He was at one and the same time unique but also "one of us" as a milkman said to me that morning as our paths crossed in Lodge Road....
