Barmby Barrage
This tidal barrage, built in 1975, is located just before the mouth of the Yorkshire Derwent and has two functions. Firstly, to keep high tides on the Ouse from flooding farmland. Secondly, to keep the Derwent a freshwater river: according to the DEFRA website, the Derwent was tidal below Elvington lock until the construction of the barrage, which prevents saline water reaching the abstraction point for public water supply at Loftsome Bridge (a.k.a. Barmby) Water Treatment Works SE7029 : Water treatment plant, Barmby.
