River Devon (Leics/Notts)

The River Devon rises from springs at the base of Jurassic limestones near Eastwell and Eaton on the Leicestershire Wolds, and flows for about 22 miles north across the vale of Belvoir to join the Trent at Newark. See LinkExternal link. Called 'Dyuene' in the 14th century, with Cox (2019) suggesting a meaning of 'the black river', referring to its early course in a deep ravine.
