Restoring a chalk stream
"This chalk stream is being restored to protect wildlife and improve water quality. Carefully managing trees and shrubs along the stream bank helps to:
- stabilise stream banks, reducing erosion and soil washing into the stream.
- reduce fine sediment, which can smother plants and riverbed habitats.
- improve water quality by filtering runoff before in enters the water.
- create a healthy balance of light and shade, keeping the stream soll while allowing native plants to grow.
A balanced amount of sunlight is essential for native bankside plants to develop strong roots that stabilise stream banks, and for in-channel species such as starworts to grow and provide habitat.
These improvements benefit species such as water voles, riverflies (mayflies, caddisflies and stoneflies) dragonflies and native aquatic plants, all of which depend on clean water, stable banks and well-vegetated margins."
