Hagg Bank Colliery

Post medieval tramway, coal mining area and buildings are visible as earthworks on air photographs taken in 1946. Later photography taken in 1993 shows the buildings to be demolished but the earthworks are still extant. The tramway appears to be associated with the area of mining, the earthworks on the level top of the adjacent hill are apparently of housing, which stood until at least the beginning of the 20th century these appear on the OS map: 1:2500 (1891-1912). The area is centred at NZ 104643.

The colliery infrastructure and the two adjacent rows of terraced houses above Hagg Farm (previously Hag House) are not shown on the 1st edition 6" to 1 mile OS map (Surveyed: 1858 to 1859, Published: 1864). The terraced houses, named as Hagg Cottages, are shown on the 2nd Edition sheets (Revised: 1895, Published: 1897) but both the coal shaft, and the waggonway serving it on the south side, are represented as 'Old', suggesting the colliery only had a very short existence. The waggonway originally connected to the Newcastle -Carlisle Railway at West Wylam Junction.
