known as Union Corner was destroyed by fire on 8th March 2026. This resulted in closure of Glasgow Central railway station (the busiest in Scotland) for over two weeks. Two weeks after reopening on 25th March, the main entrance on Gordon Street, the Union Street entrance and the Hope Street north entrance remain closed and the vehicle carriageway is temporarily in use for pedestrian access, with a one-way system in operation.
Adjacent roads were closed at the height of the fire and during the damping down which lasted over two days. Heavy equipment was brought in to enable inspection and eventual demolition of the few remaining parts of the building. Parts of Gordon Street, Renfield Street and Union Street remain closed at the time of writing (12th April 2026) and will likely remain closed for several more weeks.
