Southport War Memorial :: Shared Description

Southport's war memorial (also known as "The Monument") was built in 1923 following a national competition. There is a central obelisk, twin colonnaded cenotaphs, lamps representing the five major battles of the First World War and formal gardens with reflective pools.

The monument has recently (March 2010) been listed as “of national importance”, being granted ‘Grade II*status following an 18-month campaign by Southport Civic Society. (Historic England List Entry Number: 1379604 LinkExternal link Heritage Gateway)
