Albert Bridge :: Shared Description
Albert Bridge is a Grade II* listed road bridge Link
over the River Thames. Designed and built by Rowland Mason Ordish in 1873 as cable-stayed bridge, it proved to be structurally unsound, so in 1887 Sir Joseph Bazalgette modified it to a suspension bridge. The GLC carried out work in 1973, adding two concrete piers, which transformed the bridge into a simple beam bridge. As a result of all these modifications the bridge today is a hybrid of three different design styles.
It is one of only two original bridges in Central London and is the least busy of all the crossings. In February 2010 it was closed for 18 months of refurbishment.
