Lincolnshire Loop Line

The Lincolnshire Loop Line was a railway from Peterborough to Lincoln via Spalding and Boston. Authorised on the 26th June 1846 as part of the London and York Railway bill. Soon after authorisation the company became the more famous Great Northern Railway, they purchased the Witham Navigation and all navigation rights before starting construction of the new line in 1847. The railway opened in 1848. For a short period before the opening of the Peterborough to Doncaster stretch of the East Coast Mainline main this route was the fastest way north to Scotland. North of Boston a short branch ran to a sleeper depot. Sadly closure came in sections, with the first being Woodhall Junction to Boston which closed to passengers and goods on 17 June 1963. Other parts in the early 1970s. Most of the line has been ripped up, especially north and south of Boston however lots of the route is now cycle/walk routes.
