Waltham Abbey church :: Shared Description

The Abbey Church (Holy Cross and St Lawrence) is the parish church of Waltham Abbey. It is the former nave of the abbey church. The name derives from the legend that a miraculous stone crucifix was brought to Waltham in Saxon times.

The church was rebuilt in the 1050's by Harold Godwinsson, later King Harold II. After his death at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, Harold's body was taken to Waltham Abbey and buried within the church (just to the east of the present building).

The Abbey was the last in the country to be dissolved by Henry VIII in 1540. The nave and aisles that form the remaining structure date from circa 1100-1151. The church is listed grade 1 (List Entry number 1124155).
