The Common is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) which means they are some of the most valuable areas of countryside in Kent. There is also a series of old ragstone mines, which now serve as a hibernation site for five species of bats and are managed as a Nature Reserve by Kent Wildlife Trust.
