Sir John Maxwell Primary School
Pollokshaws was founded by the Maxwell family. It became a Burgh of Barony in 1812 when a charter under the Great Seal was granted to Sir John Maxwell.
The first school on this site opened in 1854 and was funded by Sir John Maxwell. It was extended in 1873, shortly after Eastwood School Board took over responsibility for education in the area.
By 1906 the building was again found to be too small and a new school was built on the same site. That three storey red sandstone building is the one shown. It was opened by Sir John Stirling Maxwell in 1909.
The architect of the adjacent Pollokshaws Burgh Hall (Sir Robert Rowand Anderson) was reportedly unhappy that the school was not designed to blend with the Scots Baronial style that of that hall.
Night classes were held in the school, including well attended classes in Marxism by early 20th Century political activist John Maclean.
The school closed its doors for the final time on Wednesday 22/06/2011, having served its purpose for over a hundred years. Hopefully the building by John H. Hamilton ((1851-1935) will be saved.
