St Mary Magdalene Church, Newark
The church has a fine tower and octagonal spire 236 feet tall - the highest in Nottinghamshire and fifth highest in England.
There is a crypt and crossing piers from about 1180, the crossing and west tower circa 1220, the nave circa 1385 and chancel from 1489. There is a 13 seat sedilia at the east end.
The sanctuary has chantry chapels north and south from 1500.
The church contains one of the largest brasses in England, to Alan Fleming,a wool merchant from 1361.
There is some fine medieval Stained Glass in the east end. Other glass is all 19th & 20th C.
The church was heavily restored in 19th C, by Sir George Gilbert Scott, who designed the large reredos; the gilded triptych is by Ninian Comper.
The organ was originally by G P England from 1804, but is now a four manual by Hill.
