Tanfield Memorial, St Margaret's church

A memorial to John Tanfield J.P.(1547-1625), his wife Catherine and family of Coptfold Hall, 1625. He had 19 children, but three sons and four daughters surviving are shown. his eldest son was Clovile, then William and Thomas, daughters Dorothy, Wilgiford, Elizabeth and Mary. They are seen behind their parents at the prayer desk. The Tanfield coat of arms and crest is seen, (similar to that in Burford church, SP2512). The arms include those of Heron and Neville, and other landed families to whom the Tanfields owed their descent and wealth. In his will he left ten dozen loaves of bread to be yearly distributed amongst the poor of Margaretting.
Situated above the North Door, the memorial was moved from its original position near the east window in 1870, and has been crudely repainted.
The inscription mentions the noble family, and his oblivion in the stars, in Latin.
