Bilston Tram Depot - click here for more images :: Shared Description

The depot was built by the Wolverhampton and District Electric Tramways in 1902. The WDET was one of a group of four companies promoted by the British Electric Traction Company (BET) forming the Black Country Tramways and serving the industrial triangle encompassed by Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Stourbridge, including the group of towns traditionally forming the Black Country.
The WDET tramways were taken over by Wolverhampton Corporation (who had already ceased operating their own trams just 5 days earlier!) on September 1st 1928. Tramway operation from Bilston ceased a couple of months later, services then being progressively converted to trolleybus operation (the basic reason for the purchase) by 1930. Trolleybuses continued to be operated from Bilston until the conversion of the Fighting Cocks to Willenhall route 25 in 1965.
A feature of the depot in trolleybus days was a turntable in the yard, the narrowness of the site meaning that buses could not turn round in a half-circle LinkExternal link. It was one of just 3 trolleybus turntables in the UK, the others being at Huddersfield LinkExternal link and Christchurch (Bournemouth) LinkExternal link
The depot continued to be used for motorbus operation and storage by Wolverhampton Corporation until takeover by the West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive, when it was disposed of to local coach operator Don Everall. It later became an industrial site until fire destroyed the main vehicle shed. The office building was not affected. It is now occupied by part of the Bilston Community College. The building is Listed Grade II.
