St Nicholas & St Faith, Saltash

St Nicholas & St Faith dates originally from the C12th, making it of Norman origins. It is constructed from Tartendown stone which was quarried near Landrake a few miles away. The Norman parts of the church that remain are the loft of the North Tower, and parts of the nave, chancel and transept. A north chancel chapel was added in the C14th and the "Wagon" style roof was added in the C15th. In the following century the original south chapel of St John was removed so that a Borough school could be built. The tower was raised slightly in height and a short spire was added. By the C19th the church was in a sorry state and so it underwent a typically thorough Victorian restoration, the little spire was removed at this time. Further restoration work was carried out in 1931 at which time many of the Norman features came to light. In WWII a munitions boat exploded on the river, the huge explosion damaged many building in Saltash including the East Window of the church which faces the river.
The church's unusual double appellation is a result of it being dedicated to St Nicholas as the patron saint of sailors (obviously important to a seafaring town), and to St Faith a favourite saint of the Blackfriars (Dominican monks) who first founded the church.
It is Grade I listed, see LinkExternal link and LinkExternal link
