Croydon Minster
A historic Anglican church on the edge of what is now Croydon town centre, dedicated to St John the Baptist, but for a long time known locally as just "The Parish Church". In 2011 it was declared to be a Minster (following a trend with other historic parish churches of large towns and cities).
The church, with 15th century origins, was largely rebuilt c.1870 by Sir George Gilbert Scott after a severe fire, but some of the older walls remain. It is listed grade 1 (List Entry Number 1079319). It has historic associations with the Archbishops of Canterbury who had a palace nearby. Indeed Croydon was an isolated outpost of that Diocese as recently as 1980.
