Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2012

Each summer the Serpentine Gallery builds a tea pavilion by an architect who hasn't designed a building in England before. This year it is by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei who collaborated to design the Beijing National Stadium, "The birdsnest", which was built for the 2008 Olympic Games.
This pavilion has a circular pit with seating in the lawn in front of the gallery. The roof, 1.4 metres above the surrounding ground level, is a metal disk with a shallow pool of water which reflects the gallery and the trees around. Drinks and refreshments are served from a van parked to one side.
The architecture section of the Serpentine Gallery website LinkExternal link has photos and details of all 12 pavilions, back to 2000.
