Watford station :: Shared Description

Watford station opened in 1925, at the end of a branch of the Metropolitan Railway. The Metropolitan is now one of the lines operated by London Underground.

This terminus, in a residential area, is some distance from the centre of Watford. When it was built, it was intended that the line would continue to a terminus in Watford town centre. That intention was never fulfilled.

There is now a scheme to divert this branch of the Metropolitan Line to Watford Junction over another disused railway line from Croxley. This would enable the Metropolitan line to offer better access to the town centre, as well as interchange with other railway lines. Construction of this scheme is due to start in 2014.

Once the Metropolitan line opens to Watford Junction, it is proposed that Watford station will close. This is expected to happen in January 2016.

More information about the proposed scheme is at the Croxley Rail Link website: LinkExternal link
