Peggy Bell's Bridge

Road bridge across the River Breamish west of Ingram, designed on a skew with a span of 70 feet at the site of a former ford known as Hunt or Hunters Ford.

It was built in 1908 using Hennebique Ferro-concrete construction using local river gravel and cement.

The original name was applied to a succession of earlier footbridges constructed at a location some 200 yards downstream, several of which were destroyed by flood.

Sarah Wilson (2005) in Reflections: The Breamish Valley & Ingram discusses who Peggy Bell may have been. One Margaret Bell used to live at Greenside Hill and may have been involved with raising funds to build the first footbridge sometime after the school in Ingram opened in 1834.

Sarah dismisses a prevailing story, recounted here LinkExternal link regarding a drowning at the ford which prompted building of a safer crossing.
