Iffley Road Gas Works, Swindon
Once upon a time a gasholder SU1485 : Gasholder, Iffley Road, Swindon stood at the junction of Iffley Road, Cobden Road and Harcourt Road. It was once part of the Great Western Railway factory and stored town gas made on the site for the Works. The gasholder survived a Nazi bombing raid in July 1942 and, through various changes of ownership since WWII, continued in service. However, in 2012 it was declared redundant and the gasholder was taken down leaving a large hole. The hole is destined to remain a hole until a plan to fill it in without causing unacceptable disruption has been devised....
...which it now has. Work started in July 2013 and the process of filling the hole is well under way. Access to the site is via Great Western Way, which will affect commuters but not local householders.
By the end of 2013 the hole was filled in and the site laid to topsoil. It remains in that state as of March 2014
