Inverkip Railway Station Footbridge Construction

Historically, there was a footbridge at Inverkip station from the early 1900s until the late 1960s when the line was singled and the second platform removed. The Railbrit web site has a good photo, taken in 1963, which shows the old footbridge LinkExternal link .

The line is still single and there is still only one platform, but a new footbridge was a planning condition attached to a new housing development on the other side of the line from the station platform.

The new footbridge needed to comply with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (since superseded by the Equality Act 2010). This normally entails a series of long, unsightly, wheelchair friendly ramps, but the small footprint available at Inverkip, meant that a lift was installed instead. This is unusual, but not unique, for an un-manned station (for example Prestwick International Airport and Edinburgh Park stations are un-manned and have lifts). The lift will be remotely monitored by CCTV.

The construction process has been a lengthy one, having started in February 2011 and was still not complete at the time of writing (November 2012).
