The Lost Garden of Penicuik

The garden dates from the late 1870s. It was created for Sir George Clerk, Baronet, who established the 'new' walled garden for his estate of Penicuik House. It has a length of glasshouses 100 yards long - a central conservatory flanked by vineries, with a peach house at each end [peaches were supplied for the visit of the Prince of Wales to Edinburgh in 1924]. A second, lower, range of glasshouse was planned but never built, due to the financial constraints of the time [Scottish banks were even failing back then]. The garden was leased as a Market Garden in 1900 and continued as such, with various tenants, until the 1970s. The main garden area was planted to Christmas trees, but they were never harvested; the upper area was used for charcoal burning. The buildings became derelict or were demolished. In 2005 the Penicuik Community Development Trust was formed and in 2009 a proposal, as the Penicuik Food Project, was made to restore the garden and return it to productivity. Lengthy negotiations led to the establishment of a 30-year lease of the Lost Garden and work started on site in February-March 2012. LinkExternal link
