Thorold Memorials, Marston church

The church contains the memorials to Sir William and Sir Anthony Thorold.
William Thorold was son of John Thorold who built Marston Hall. He was high Sheriff of Lincolnshire and died in 1569. He married twice, first to Dorothy Leeke. They had three sons, Anthony, William and Richard. William was the great-grandfather of Sir George Thorold of Harmston SK9762 : Memorial to George Thorold, All Saints' church, Harmston
His second wife was Margaret Hussey and they had two sons, Edmund and Robert.

Anthony Thorold was born in 1520 and was High Sheriff of Lincolnshire and MP for Grantham. He first married Margaret Sutton and they had six children. Four sons and two daughters. He married secondly Anne Constable and they had one daughter. Their son Anthony died young. Son Thomas became Gentleman of the Horse to the Fourth Earl of Rutland SK8039 : Tomb of 4th Earl of Rutland, St Mary's Church, Bottesford. Son William married Frances Tyrwhitt, daughter of Robert Tyrwhitt of Kettleby TA0507 : Memorial to Sir Robert Tyrwhitt & wife, All Saints' church, Bigby. Daughter Martha married Sir Philip Tyrwhitt of Stainfield.

The Thorolds lived in Marston Hall. During the Civil War Cromwell's troops damaged the Hall, and the fire marks are still visible. Anthony's tomb was also damaged by the troops, and was restored in 1937.
