Willington Power Station
The coal fired Willington A Power Station was commissioned in 1957 operating with 400MW capacity. It was swiftly followed by the adjacent Willington B Station which opened in 1962 with an additional 400MW capacity. The stations closed in 1998 and demolished except for the cooling towers.
The current (2013) owners RWE have planning permission for a 2400MW gas powered station on the site. The cooling towers would be demolished.
Moderator update 2025:
The gas powered station project was reported as still on hold in 2022 but the cooling towers remain. Under present policies it seems unlikely to go ahead.
