Former Argyll Motor Works
The Argyll Motor Works was an extensive factory complex, built in 1905-7. It was considered to be the largest car factory in Europe at that time, but it only built cars for six years before being sold to the Royal Navy and converted to a torpedo factory.
The factory closed after WWI, but was reopened by The Admiralty as a torpedo factory again in 1937.
Torpedo production continued into the 1950s. The building was later taken over by Plessey and was the site of a workers' sit-in in the early 1970s.
Following another period of disuse and partial demolition, it reopened as Loch Lomond Retail Outlets in 1997 and remains a retail outlet centre at the time of writing in April 2013.
There is a car museum within the building, this was not open when I visited in April 2013, but still appears to be in business.
