Crathie Court :: Shared Description
Crathie Court is an eight-storey building in the International Modernism style on Crathie Drive. It has a strong Art Deco influence, despite being built in the 1950s. It was designed by Dr Ronald Bradbury, Director of Housing at Glasgow Corporation, as an experiment in high-rise housing following a directive from the Scottish Office in 1945. The building won a Saltire Award for the best-designed flats in Scotland in 1952.
It was part of Glasgow Corporation's programme of hostels for single women and consisted of 88 bed-sit flats. As a result, it became known locally as "the spinster flats".
It was Glasgow's first foray into "modern" high rise housing and its construction set the trend for future high-rise council housing in the city.
Glasgow Housing Association recently invested £2.6 million in upgrading the building. Today the 88 studio flats house mainly older people - both men and women.
Well worth the short detour from Dumbarton Road or Crow Road if you are interested in architecture. The grounds are private.
